Long, Long Ago

Black Boar Mountain

When the gray light began to peek through the chinquapins, the couple rose and moved out together, without a word. The woman walked beside her husband, not behind him. He liked it this way as much as she did. There were hares and deer and squirrels to be taken. They only needed to take care to look out for the large cat said to be prowling high up. That would be a prize, they had said to one another, but not one that should be stalked. It was best if the cat and the people could both take what they needed and steer clear of one another. Only if the cat threatened them should it be hunted. Up ahead of them a fat hare poked its nose out of a thicket. It ducked back when it sensed them coming, and the couple waited silently. Eventually the hare peeked out, and the man nocked an arrow and released it into the side of the animal. The woman drew the arrow through it and dressed it on the ground.

In time they saw another one. The woman took this one and the man dressed it. There were signs of other game, too, deer and elk. But the woman thought she saw movement up above, a serpentine slither, something there, but then gone behind a patch of brush. The man wanted to know more, but she countered him. Better to be safe, she said.

They returned the way they had come.
